Dr. Nikolas Capetanakis
Dr. Capetanakis, “Dr. Cap” is a Board Certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist practicing in Encinitas, and is on staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. Specializing in unmedicated deliveries, vbac births, minimally invasive surgery, and fertility treatments, Dr. Cap takes a holistic approach to medicine and the care for his patients. As a doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, he believes that in order to successfully treat physical complaints, one must understand the entire system and recognize how each part of the body is interconnected to maximize healthcare needs.
Dr. Cap is a San Diego native who never forgot his roots. He graduated from Hilltop High School in Chula Vista where he was student body president and played numerous sports including soccer and tennis. He went on to attend the University of California at Santa Barbara, graduating top of his class with a degree in Environmental Studies. Once finished, he returned to San Diego and conducted research in the Department of Immunology at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, all the while staying focused on the goal of medical school.
Dr. Cap received his medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, where he was also president of the medical school. Along with all the requirements of an MD, he is trained in the art of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). OMM is an approach to manual therapy that uses physical contact to improve the impaired or altered function of the musculo-skeletal system.
Later, Dr. Cap completed his residency from Loma Linda University Medical Center, receiving numerous teaching awards from medical students, residents and attending physicians. He was also recognized for his surgical skills with the Special Excellence in Endoscopic Procedures Award. Additionally, he has been trained in minimally invasive surgical procedures, and believes that returning to normal function quickly and safely should be the goal for all surgical procedures.
Additional positions include:
- Vice Chair of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Department at Scripps Memorial Hospital – Encinitas since 2010.
- Member of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
- Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
When not working, Dr. Capetanakis enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife Angie and their three children, Yianna, Victoria & George. He is an avid cyclist and has performed in numerous triathlons and bike rides. He also enjoys camping, hiking, soccer and traveling.
Angie runs all things non-medical in the office. You will see her at the front desk and most likely get her on the phone if you call on a non-clinic day. She also was born and raised in San Diego, but somehow – despite going to the same Greek church – didn’t meet Dr. Cap until well through graduate school. Angie attended Cornell University where she studied Hospitality Management, held active leadership positions in her sorority – Kapa Alpha Theta, and was on the women’s soccer team until injury forced her into early retirement. After graduating, Angie returned home to study law at the University of San Diego. She led the negotiations team and was president of the Law School. She and Dr. Cap married in 2007.
Angie worked as a civil litigator for a few years before motherhood shifted her focus. Pregnancy, labor + delivery, and becoming a mom changed her. It was such a powerful journey that Angie knew she wanted to be a part of helping to ensure that other women also felt empowered and elated when remembering their journey into motherhood.
When the opportunity presented itself to start Cap Women’s Health, Angie was all-in. She quit working at the law firm and dove into starting this practice with Dr. Cap. She was newly pregnant with their second child at the time.
Now that the kids are older and in school, while still working at the office, Angie has returned to law to help young families with estate planning. Please feel free to email her or click here for more information.
Although office hours may vary, Dr. Capetanakis sees patients in the office on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you call the office outside of office hours, you will reach the voicemail. Please leave a detailed message; as we are diligent, and do our best to return all phone calls by the next business day, if not the same day.
